The Nutritional Information tables on our Barcode Lookup page now include data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Branded Food Products Database, their database currently has just over 175,000 products. Note that the information is provided to the USDA by the actual food manufacturers and is updated continuously. You can search the latest version of the database here: https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search/
We are also adding many new items from the USDA Branded Food Products Database as quickly as we can, currently our database has over 420,000 products!
Our Nutritional Information tables show amounts by weight per serving, this is to avoid the problem that the Percent Daily Values (%DV) recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA for a 2000 Calorie daily diet, may differ from values recommended in other countries. You should always check the information on the actual food label in your own country, for more information about nutrition fact labels on food see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrition_facts_label
The Nutrition Facts label shown above is the current standard, however in May 2016, the US FDA had issued new Nutrition Facts Label rules and set a compliance date for 26 July 2018 for most manufacturers. On 13 June 2017, the FDA announced its intention to extend the compliance date for the Nutrition Facts Label final rules.
Although Quality Control checks are carried out by members of the Public-Private Partnership who compile the USDA Branded Food Products Database, where errors exist we weed them out and advise USDA as we find them - for example we recently found UPC 044261591273 "Abe's Mini-Muppins..." should be "...Mini-Muffins" and UPC 763027728417 "Salem Baking Co. Cookie Thins Mayer Lemon should of course be "...Meyer Lemon"!
The USDA Branded Food Products Database is the result of a Public-Private Partnership, whose goal is to enhance public health and the sharing of open data. For more information see: https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/docs/BFPDB_Doc.pdf
